Late in the evening on 30 December 2023 the Council of the European Union decided unanimously on the accession of Bulgaria and Romania to the Schengen area with the abolition of controls at internal air and sea borders as of 31 March 2024.

As an advisory body to the Council of Ministers for the development and implementation of policies to support the development of civil society, the Civil Society Development Council (CSDC) is chaired by a Deputy Prime Minister — the only state representative on the council, who chairs its meetings but does not vote on decisions.
