The Republic of Bulgaria and the United Mexican States established diplomatic relations in 1938. In 1941, during the Second World War, Mexico severed diplomatic relations with Bulgaria. In 1974, the relations were re-established. In 1974, Bulgaria opened its embassy in Mexico and Mexico opened its embassy in Sofia in 1975.

Since 1989 the embassy of Mexico in Sofia has been closed. The Mexican embassy in Sofia has not been re-opened.

Traditionally the Mexican Ambassador in Hungary is accredited to Bulgaria.

The Bulgarian Ambassador in Mexico is also accredited to the seven countries in Central America – Belize, the Republic of Costa Rica, the Republic of El Salvador, the Republic of Guatemala, the Republic of Honduras, the Republic of Nicaragua and the Republic of Panama.

Since 2003, Mr. Pencho Ralchev, has been appointed as Honorary Consul of Mexico in Bulgaria with consular district the territory of the country.

Bulgarian-Mexican relations have rich history, traditions and potential and Mexico stays high on the agenda of Bulgarian foreign policy priorities in Latin America. There is good cooperation and mutual support of candidatures within international organizations and forums.
