Diplomatic relations were established on September 10, 1971. Our ambassador to Rome has been accredited in Malta. Relationships are close, with no contentious or unresolved issues. Common interests and similar positions on important issues on the European agenda determine the desire for closer interaction and coordination.

In recent years, the following visits have been paid at top level: two visits of President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca (Plovdiv, 13 - 15 September 2016, Sofia, 4 - 6 February 2018); visit of President Rosen Plevneliev (Valletta, November 17-18, 2016).

Good level of trade and economic relations with a tendency to intensify.

According to the Maltese data, Bulgarian citizens residing in Malta permanently are the third largest community from EU member states. There are about 10  000 Bulgarian citizens residing in Malta. There is a Bulgarian Sunday School.
