Bilateral relations are traditionally friendly and good, characterised by frank and pragmatic dialogue. Switzerland is an important partner of the EU and Bulgaria. In Sofia on November 14, 2016 was marked the 100th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations with Switzerland.

Bilateral cooperation is characterised by political dialogue at all levels. The most important visits to Bulgaria in 2018 were paid by the Vice President and Head of the Federal Department of Finance Ueli Maurer, of the Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs Dr. Ignazio Cassis at the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ekaterina Zaharieva, of the Head of the Federal Department of Police and Justice Simonetta Sommaruga. The Vice President of the Republic of Bulgaria Iliana Yotova, the Minister of Culture Boil Banov, and the Minister of Education and Science Krasimir Valchev have visited Switzerland. In 2019 the President of the Republic of Bulgaria Rumen Radev visited twice Switzerland. The Prime Minister Boyko Borisov visited twice the Swiss Confederation in 2019 and 2020 to take part on the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Within the framework of the Bulgarian-Swiss program, fruitful cooperation is carried out and various projects are implemented in areas important for our country. The assistance provided by Switzerland, the exchange of experience and good practices are valuable contributions for Bulgaria.

The Swiss Confederation is a promising trade and economic partner for Bulgaria thanks to its competitive economy and the development of innovations, but there are opportunities for deepening investment cooperation

There is active exchange in the field of education and science between the two countries. The DOMINO project, which introduces dual vocational training in the Bulgarian educational system, is particularly successful and useful. Bulgarian Sunday Schools operate in Switzerland, Bulgarian language is taught at the Institute of Slavic Studies at the University of Bern.

According to official data, the Bulgarian community in Switzerland at the end of 2021 numbers 14 394 persons who work mainly in the field of science, culture and arts, as well as in the banking sector and international organisations.
