Security level:

Following attempts to politically destabilize the country in 2006, frequent inspections as well as traffic stops are common. Travellers to Tonga are advised to avoid places where demonstrations are held and crowded places.


Healthcare:

Since the beginning of 2019, there has been some increase in measles (smallpox) cases in Australia and New Zealand. While the risk is relatively low in these two countries, the situation is considerably more serious in other countries in the region, especially in Samoa, where a state of emergency has been declared. A sudden increase in measles cases has also been recorded in Tonga and Fiji. The Solomon Islands authorities have introduced a number of requirements for travellers to the country in order to prevent the spread of the disease within its territory. There are no particular recommendations for immunizations, except for yellow fever. Nevertheless, it is recommended that you have a combined vaccine against diphtheria, tetanus, hepatitis A and B, and typhoid. There is no malaria in Tonga.

Homosexual acts between men are punishable under the local legislation, sometimes by imprisonment of up to 10 years.


Customs requirements:


You may import unlimited amounts of local and foreign currency. It is recommended that you carry either US dollars, traveller’s checks or credit cards. There are no restrictions on the import of items for personal use, including small quantities of liquor and tobacco products.
There are no customs restrictions on the export of local or foreign currency or goods.


Road traffic:


The traffic of vehicles is in the left lane of the roadway. The country has domestic airlines as well as road connections between the separate islands. The road network is in good condition. When using taxis, it is recommended to negotiate the price of the service to the final destination.


Practical advice:


It is recommended to avoid heavy physical strains during the initial adaptation period. Drink enough fluids during the hot period. Avoid fatty foods as well as excessive alcohol consumption. Comply with conservative local dress code and behaviour standards. Observe strict personal hygiene, with frequent hand washing. Carefully consume fruits and salads. Carry with yourself the most necessary medicines.

Climatic characteristics:


Tonga has a tropical climate characterized by the absence of distinct seasons in the true sense of the word, but only by the alternation of rainy and dry periods. The rainy season lasts from December to April, when frequent tropical storms are possible, adversely affecting the local infrastructure and the road traffic.

Travel papers and visas

You need an international passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry in the country. Bulgarian citizens can obtain a visa for Tonga through the Embassy of the country in London.
