Bosnia and Herzegovina

Bulgaria was the first country to recognise the independent and sovereign Bosnia and Herzegovina on January 15, 1992. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in January 1996, and in March 1996 an Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria was opened in Sarajevo. In November 2005, pursuant to a decision of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, an Embassy of Bosnia and Herzegovina was established in Bulgaria and opened on May 18, 2006.

In its bilateral relations with Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria seeks to assist and share experience in the process of European and Euro-Atlantic integration, to maintain an active political dialogue at all levels in order to increase trade and tourism, to intensify relations between sectoral ministries, departments, organisations and structures of the civil society of the two countries, and to regularly update  the bilateral legal framework. Strengthening cooperation within the region in order to consolidate stability in Southeast Europe, in particular the Western Balkans, is a priority of the Bulgarian foreign policy.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is a priority partner within Bulgaria's Official Development Aid programme.
