Approximately four hundred guests from all walks of life in the Yangtze River Delta region attended.
Bulgaria was represented with a booth where visitors could taste yogurt made with Bulgarian starter culture, discover Bulgarian cosmetic products containing rose oil, and learn about investment and tourism opportunities in the country.

On May 9 itself, the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China (EUCCC) organized a celebration with the participation of managers of European companies in Shanghai, the Consuls General of EU Member States and representatives of Chinese local authorities.
In his speech to the forum, the President of EUCCC Shanghai, Carlo D’Andrea, noted that the EU is united in realizing its vision of openness, the rule of law, fairness, solidarity, and respect for human dignity. He acknowledged that European companies significantly contribute to China’s remarkable economic development through their investments, technology, expertise, industrial ethics, sustainability, standards, and long-term commitment. He called on the Chinese side to respond to these commitments by ensuring conditions that allow fair competition and development. He also expressed his expectation that the EU would outgrow its reactive approach toward China and begin to act with the necessary speed, unity, and a truly strategic and autonomous vision for the future.
The EU Ambassador to China, Jorge Toledo, delivered a video address to those present. In it, he emphasized that the EU’s strength lies in the predictability of its rules of action, clearly defined standards, and equal conditions for the development of all economic entities in EU Member States. He noted that European companies in Shanghai in the fields of automotive manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and smart manufacturing are proof that EU-China cooperation is successful when the Chinese side is open to cooperation. He highlighted the role of the European Commission, the Consulates General of EU Member States in Shanghai, and the chambers of commerce and industry of EU Member States in the megapolis, including EUCCC, in maintaining open channels of communication with local authorities in the Yangtze River Delta region, resolving disputes, and creating new opportunities for cooperation with Chinese partners.

Bulgaria addressed the OSCE Permanent Council on the dangers of Holocaust Distortion and Denial, 7 May 2026

Ambassador Ivan Gospodinov addressed the OSCE on the dangers of Holocaust distortion and denial.
He emphasised that Holocaust denial and distortion are dangerous forms of antisemitism that should be countered everywhere and at all times, including in the digital space, where such narratives and disinformation can spread easily and widely, reaching new audiences and testing the resilience of democratic societies. Addressing this menace requires the collective efforts of all stakeholders — state institutions, civil society, academia, and religious leaders.
Bulgaria reaffirms its strong commitment to preserving the memory of the Holocaust through education, commemoration, and support for historical research. Fostering historical awareness, especially among younger generations, is essential in preventing the recurrence of such atrocities. In this regard, Bulgaria supports the continued efforts for accurate, evidence-based teaching about the Holocaust and the broader consequences of hatred and discrimination.

On 7 May this year, a meeting of the Interdepartmental Coordination Mechanism /ICM/ on Bulgaria’s accession to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the chairmanship of Deputy Minister Velizar Shalamanov. Representatives of all ministries and other executive branch institutions involved in the accession process took part in the meeting.
During the session, participants conducted a comprehensive review of the progress achieved to date and the next steps required to complete the technical phase of the accession process, in line with the political ambition of securing an invitation for Bulgaria to join the Organisation within the current year. Deputy Minister Shalamanov expressed gratitude on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in its capacity as coordinating institution, for the intensive efforts undertaken by all institutions, including throughout the mandate of the caretaker government, in pursuit of this strategic foreign policy objective for Bulgaria.
On 6 May 2026, Ambassador Irena Gancheva, together with the Minister of State for Law and Justice of Pakistan, Barrister Aqeel Malik, participated as a guest of honor in the inauguration of a community children’s library and an accompanying tree plantation initiative at F-9 Park in Islamabad.

The event was organized by the DICE Forum (Diplomacy - Inclusivity - Climate - Education) in support of promoting literacy, reading, and education in Pakistan, as well as with the aim of strengthening cooperation in addressing climate change, environmental protection, and the advancement of sustainable development.
The program also included a visit to the Thalassemia Center of Sundus Foundation. Thalassemia is a serious health issue in Pakistan, rooted primarily in the tradition of inter-family marriages. In addition to providing treatment for patients with severe forms of the disease, Sundus Foundation works to raise awareness of the risks associated with thalassemia, promote prevention, and advocate for legislative changes in Pakistan to address this problem.
In her remarks at the event, Ambassador Irena Gancheva highlighted the importance of the initiative, dedicated to the power of knowledge, the value of compassion, and the urgent need to care both for people in need and the environment, while expressing appreciation to the team of the DICE Forum for their inspiring efforts. In connection with the opening of the community children’s library, she emphasized that books and reading enlighten minds and lay the foundations for progress and understanding in every society. In Pakistan - a country with a predominantly young population, where more than 20 million children are still out of school, the implementation of such projects is a highly meaningful endeavor for strengthening knowledge, critical thinking, and personal development. The Ambassador further noted that the importance of libraries is even greater in today’s world, where information is instantly accessible through advanced technologies and artificial intelligence; however, it is essential to remember that books remain an irreplaceable source of in-depth and comprehensive knowledge. In this context, it was underscored that the project strongly resonates with Bulgaria as a country that honors and officially celebrates its alphabet and culture, as well as its educators and enlighteners, who have contributed to preserving Bulgarian identity and spirit over the centuries.
Ambassador Gancheva further stated that the pursuit of knowledge naturally extends to our responsibility for human well-being - through care for both health and the environment. Planting a tree is a small but meaningful step - a gesture toward nature that can lead to lasting positive change in the future.
The event was attended by representatives of the diplomatic corps in Islamabad, as well as by members of Pakistan’s governmental and non-governmental sectors.

Ambassador Gergana Karadjova delivered a national statement during the United Nations Security Council High-Level Open Debate on “The Safety and Protection of Waterways in the Maritime Domain” under the agenda item “Maintenance of International Peace and Security.”

Ambassador Gergana Karadjova delivered a national statement during the United Nations Security Council High-Level Open Debate on “The Safety and Protection of Waterways in the Maritime Domain” under the agenda item “Maintenance of International Peace and Security.” We share highlights from the statement of the Permanent Representative of Bulgaria to the United Nations: • Bulgaria highly appreciates the initiative of the Kingdom of Bahrain to convene this important and timely UN Security Council Open Debate. We take this opportunity to once again express our solidarity with our partners in the region, who continue to face direct negative consequences of the military escalation in the Middle East. • The situation in the Strait of Hormuz continues to evolve into a serious global economic and trade crisis. Maritime traffic is nearly paralyzed, leading to significant economic consequences, including an expected decline in global trade, risks to food security, rising inflation due to surging oil prices, and a slowdown in global economic growth. These effects are already being felt by people around the world, especially the most vulnerable. • Bulgaria supports Bahrain’s efforts to advance the implementation adoption of a United Nations Security Council resolution 2817 co-sponsored by 135 Member States, including Bulgaria • Bulgaria believes respect for international law is a non-negotiable prerequisite for lasting peace and calls for strict compliance with UNCLOS as the legal framework for all ocean activities. We demand an immediate end to illegal restrictions and full restoration of freedom of navigation. • As a Black Sea littoral State, Bulgaria prioritizes the swift and effective implementation of the EU’s Strategic Approach to the Black Sea. Our active role will be a key enabler to strengthening maritime and environmental security, as well as ensuring freedom of navigation in a waterway of strategic importance for broader Europe-Asia connectivity.
