On June 13, 2026 the traditional EU Cultural Fair was held at the big lawn of the Canadian Museum of History in Ottawa, Gatineau. This year the festival once again gave the Canadian public the opportunity to learn about the culture and the traditions of the EU member states represented in Ottawa.
The Bulgarian stand, launched up by the Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria with the assistance from the Bulgarian Community of the National Capital Region volunteers, featured informational materials, art from local Bulgarian artist, traditional items and souvenirs from Bulgaria. The visitors had the opportunity to taste Bulgarian wines, specially selected for the occasion, and traditional Bulgarian sweets, which made the Bulgarian stand one of the most sought-after at the event. Many visitors were genuinely interested in the tourism opportunities in Bulgaria, with many sharing plans to visit the country in the near future.
Bulgaria was also one of the highlights of the event's cultural program. The country was represented by the folklore groups "Orfeya" and "Vito Horo" from Ottawa, who performed Bulgarian folklore songs and dances, eventually inviting the public to join in a traditional Bulgarian horo.
The EU Cultural Fair was a great success and once again showcased the spirit and the cultural diversity of Europe.

On June 13, 2026, the 48th Annual MacGahan Festival was held in New Lexington, Ohio, honoring the life and legacy of American journalist Januarius MacGahan, whose reports on the suppression of the April Uprising of 1876 helped bring international attention to the suffering of the Bulgarian people under Ottoman rule.

Organized annually by the American-Bulgarian MacGahan Foundation, the festival brings together members of the Bulgarian-American community and American friends of Bulgaria from across the Midwest.
The program began with a memorial service at MacGahan’s grave, officiated by Father Vladimir Bakardzhiev, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at MacGahan’s statue in downtown New Lexington. The monument was created and donated by renowned Bulgarian sculptor Lyubomir Dalchev.
Among the special guests this year was the “Otets Paisii” Folk Dance Ensemble from Pittsburgh, which presented traditional Bulgarian dances to residents and visitors of New Lexington. For the performance, local authorities temporarily closed the town’s main street, transforming it into a stage for Bulgarian folklore and culture.
The celebration continued at the Perry County Library with musical and dance performances, as well as the presentation of scholarships to the winners of the annual essay competition dedicated to the life and work of Januarius MacGahan.
During the event, the Consul General of the Republic of Bulgaria in Chicago, Svetoslav Stankov, donated books on the April Uprising to the library in anticipation of the upcoming 150th anniversary of one of the most significant events in Bulgarian history.
In his remarks, Consul General Stankov emphasized MacGahan’s enduring place in Bulgarian national memory and his contribution to the friendship between Bulgaria and the United States.
“Through his journalism, MacGahan helped bring the truth about the suffering of the Bulgarian people to the attention of the world, and he remains forever inscribed in Bulgarian history. History teaches us that one person, armed with truth, courage, and a sense of justice, can change the fate of entire nations. Such a person was Januarius MacGahan—American by birth, but forever a friend of Bulgaria,” Consul General Stankov stated.
The Consul General also expressed gratitude to New Lexington Mayor Trent Thompson, the City Council, George Adams, President of the American-Bulgarian MacGahan Foundation, the Association of Bulgarians in Cincinnati, and Biliana Stafura, director of the “Otets Paisii” Ensemble, for their efforts to preserve MacGahan’s legacy and strengthen the friendship between Bulgaria and the United States.
The MacGahan Festival remains one of the most important annual events dedicated to Bulgarian-American friendship and serves as a lasting symbol of the Bulgarian people's gratitude to the man who helped the world learn about the tragedy and heroism of Bulgaria in 1876.

Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Bulgaria Stefka Yovcheva was honored to attend the “Muzika!” Festival at the Koger Center for the Arts in Columbia, South Carolina, presented by Kalin and Sharon Tchonev, founders of the Varna International Music Academy.

The talented singers of the acclaimed youth choir “Detska Kitka” from Plovdiv, under the direction of Yana Deliradeva, captivated the audience with their own repertoire and as part of Ernest Bloch’s choral-orchestral masterpiece Sacred Service, under the baton of Maestro Buchalter of the Metropolitan Opera.
Ms. Yovcheva was introduced by the Mayor of Columbia, Daniel Rickenmann. In her remarks, she emphasized that the participation of “Detska Kitka” is a wonderful reflection not only of the friendship between Bulgaria and the United States, but also of the long-standing partnership between Plovdiv and Columbia as sister cities. South Carolina holds a special place in Bulgarian-American relations, as it is the home state of one of Bulgaria’s most steadfast supporters in the U.S. Congress - Congressman Joe Wilson, founder and co-chair of the Bulgaria Caucus.
Particularly moving is Sharon’s personal story, as her family was among the nearly 50,000 Bulgarian Jews rescued during World War II. Ms. Yovcheva noted that this remains one of the brightest and most inspiring chapters in Bulgaria’s history.
The event was attended by Don Tomlin, Honorary Consul of Bulgaria for South Carolina, and Svetla Lipski, Director of the Bulgarian School “Patilansko Tsarstvo” in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Thank you Kalin and Sharon Tchonev - for your hospitality, dedication, and unwavering commitment to promoting long-lasting cultural ties between Bulgaria and the United States through the universal language of music!
For nearly three decades the Varna International Music Academy has organized and produced dozens of musical events - including festivals, concerts, academies, and competitions - that support the development of young musicians and foster international cultural exchange.

The eighth edition of the Festival of Bulgarian Books in Brussels took place on 13 and 14 June 2026 at the GC De Markten Cultural Centre, in the heart of the Belgian capital. Established as one of the most significant cultural events for the Bulgarian community abroad, the festival once again brought together literature enthusiasts from Belgium and neighbouring countries, offering an opportunity to meet contemporary Bulgarian authors, discover new books, and take part in inspiring literary discussions.
The festival was organised by the Bulgarian Cultural Association in Belgium with the support of the Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria in Brussels and with the kind assistance of the Permanent Representation of Bulgaria to the European Union and the Mission of Bulgaria to NATO. The Bulgarian publishing house ICU was a partner in the organisation of the event.
Ambassador Natalia Uzunova took part in the opening of the festival, welcoming participants and guests and highlighting the importance of Bulgarian books as a bridge between generations and as a key bearer of national memory, language, and cultural identity. Special guests at the ceremony were the children’s folk formation “Ha Tropenete” from Antwerp and children from the Bulgarian Sunday School “Ran Bosilek” in Brussels, whose performances brought a festive spirit and contributed to the rich cultural atmosphere of the event.
Over the course of two full days, visitors had the opportunity to meet Vasil Popov, Demetra Duleva, Nikolay Terziyski, Dimitar Rikov, Evgeni Cherepov, Krum Krumov and others. The authors presented their work, took part in literary discussions, met with readers, and delighted their audience with signed dedications and autographs.
At the accompanying book fair, visitors had the opportunity to discover and purchase books from leading Bulgarian publishing houses, including Janet 45, Znatsi, Ciela, Colibri, Lemur, SoftPress, Hermes, and Potayniche. The children’s literature stand also attracted great interest with its rich selection of books for young readers.
For a second consecutive year, the festival also hosted an international meeting of reading clubs, bringing together representatives of Bulgarian reading communities from different parts of Europe and providing a valuable opportunity for the exchange of ideas, best practices, and future initiatives aimed at promoting the Bulgarian literature and encouraging reading among Bulgarian communities abroad.
What began as an initiative of Tanya Staneva, Rada Gankova, and a group of like-minded members of the Bulgarian Cultural Association in Belgium has today become one of the most recognisable events dedicated to Bulgarian literature and culture among Bulgarian communities across Europe.
This year’s edition of the festival also received media coverage thanks to the journalist Ivan Ruslanov, from the Bulgarian National Radio, as well as the official photographer of the event Nevena Rikova,.

On June 11, 2026, the Consul General of the Republic of Bulgaria in New York, Angel Angelov, participated in the Annual Reception of AJC New York, one of the leading organizations of the Jewish community in the United States. The event brought together approximately 400 participants, including representatives of local government, the diplomatic corps, religious and civic organizations, as well as members of the business and academic communities.
This year’s reception focused on leadership in a time of rising antisemitism and on efforts to counter hate speech and hate crimes. A central part of the program was a discussion featuring the co-chairs of the New York City Council’s Task Force to Combat Antisemitism, Council Members Eric Dinowitz and Inna Vernikov.
The Consul General of Bulgaria had the opportunity to briefly participate in the discussion. In response, the panelists emphasized the importance of historical examples of cooperation among public institutions, faith communities, and civil society, noting that the development of broad coalitions remains one of the Task Force’s key priorities.
