Son of the well-known Bulgarian ambassador Rayko Nikolov.

• May 2019 – March 2024 – Ambassador of the Republic of Bulgaria to the United Kingdom; Permanent Representative of Bulgaria to the International Maritime Organisation, London;
• August 2013 – October 2018 – Ambassador to Italy with accreditations to Malta and to San Marino;
• 13 March 2013 – Acting Prime Minister, serving as Minister of Foreign Affairs at the same time;
• 2010 – 2013 – Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to France and Monaco and Representative of the President of the Republic to the International Organisation de la Francophonie;
• 2009 – 2010 – Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs (second time);
