13 May 2015 News

Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov participated in the meeting of NATO Foreign Ministers, which takes place on 13-14 May in Antalya, Turkey. The forum started with an informal working breakfast on the initiative of US Secretary of State John Kerry. He informed his colleagues about his recent talks in Sochi with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, as well as about the recent commitments in the negotiations on Iran's nuclear program.

Minister Daniel Mitov once again welcomed the agreements reached on April 2 in Lausanne on the key Parameters of Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action regarding Iran's Nuclear Program and reiterated the country's commitment to seek a solution to the Iranian nuclear issue through diplomatic means. The Bulgarian Foreign Minister emphasized that there is a real opportunity to achieve a comprehensive agreement within the established deadline, June 30.

At the following meeting of the North Atlantic Council with Resolute Support Operational Partner Nations and Potential Operational Partner Nations in Afghanistan, the participants reviewed the progress of the mission and discussed the basic principles of NATO's Enduring Partnership with Afghanistan. Foreign Ministers agreed that the key to Afghanistan's future is coping with the difficult economic situation, ensuring the rule of law, the fight against corruption and respect for women's rights. They voiced concerns over the entry of Islamic state to the country.

ISIS was one of the topics discussed during the working lunch, along with the situation in Iraq, Syria and Libya. The participants assessed today's meeting as a timely and necessary opportunity to discuss ways for responding to threats and challenges from the east and south, facing the Alliance. Minister Mitov said that NATO’s unity in these difficult times is a guarantee for the stability and security of the Member States.

The Bulgarian Foreign Minister held bilateral meetings with his Georgian counterpart Tamar Beruchashvili, and with Igor Lukšić, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Montenegro. The agenda includes also talks with Nikola Poposki, Foreign Minister of the Republic of Macedonia, the Hungarian Foreign Minister, Peter Siyyarto, and the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland.

The first day program of the meeting in Antalya will be concluded with a NATO-Ukraine Commission, which is expected to review the security situation in the country and to reaffirm the strong support of the Alliance for the democratic process in Ukraine.
