Bulgarian Foreign Minister welcomes the statement by the President of the Security Council on the deteriorating situation in Syria

04 August 2011 News

Regarding the statement by the President of the UN Security Council on Syria, Bulgarian Foreign Minister Nickolay Mladenov said:

“Bulgaria welcomes the statement by the President of the United Nations Security Council in regard to the worsening situation in Syria. Syrian citizens of all religions and ethnic groups are pushing for change and real reform. The answer that they want to hear will not come from the barrel of a tank in Hama. The answer can be given only by President Al-assad through real and radical reforms being implemented - as repeatedly has been promised.

“Indiscriminate violation of human rights and the use of force against civilians are utterly unacceptable. Syria is a cradle of civilisation and should not become synonymous with repression today. Syria’s economy is on the verge of collapse, the tourism industry effectively does not exist and foreign investments have been withdrawn. All this can be overcome if the authorities in Damascus meet the legitimate demands of the Syrian people with concrete reforms, rather than violence.”
