Ending the hostilities in Eastern Ukraine and improving the humanitarian situation is number one priority

17 November 2014 News

This was said by Minister Daniel Mitov during today's regular Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels. Main topic on the agenda of the Council was the situation in Ukraine. Ministers urged all parties to fully implement the Minsk documents and expressed deep concern over the violation of the ceasefire and the reports of heavy weapons and troops crossing the Ukrainian-Russian border. The European Union’s foreign ministers decided also to widen the list of sanctions on individuals.

"Ending the hostilities and improving the humanitarian situation is number one priority," said Minister Daniel Mitov. "The reported  presence of Russian military equipment in Ukraine is disturbing and there is a risk of escalation of the conflict," Minister Daniel Mitov said.

In the context of the EU's support for reforms in Ukraine, Bulgaria has clearly underscored the need for reform of the energy market in the country. "We are pleased with the agreement on gas supplies reached under the European Commission auspices and we are confident that it will be observed. Ukrainian energy sector also needs reforms," said Minister Daniel Mitov.

The sanctions have so far had an effect on Russia's economy. But at the same time, the EU needs to build a comprehensive long-term strategy for its relations with Russia. Bulgaria will participate effectively in the development of such a strategy, said the Bulgarian Foreign Minister.

The Council also discussed the Middle East peace process. Bulgaria urged all to condemn the recent terrorist attacks in the State of Israel. Both sides to the conflict need to engage seriously and with specific actions to avoid further escalation of tensions, pointed out Daniel Mitov.

Another key topic on the agenda of the Foreign Affairs Council was the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina after the elections on 12 October. Ministers shared the view that the country's leaders must act responsibly for the rapid formation of institutions at all levels. They confirmed their readiness to assist BiH in overcoming the stalemate in the European integration by conducting political, economic and social reforms that will lead to the implementation of the established European criteria and standards.
