Statement of the Spokesperson of the MFA on the adoption of the Constitution and the appointment of a new caretaker government in the Republic of Tunisia

27 January 2014 News

In regard to the adoption of the Constitution and the appointment of a new caretaker government in the Republic of Tunisia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria extends its congratulations to the friendly people of Tunisia. The performed step is not only a significant success of the Tunisian society, but also a positive model for the region of North Africa.

The fundamental law of the country will ensure the promotion and protection of the human rights and the democratic institutions. This is an important stage in the transition period that has started after the onset of the Arab Spring in 2011.

On this occasion, Bulgaria reaffirms its commitment to support the people of Tunisia in their efforts towards democracy and state-building, which guarantees the basic rights and freedoms, as were also the guiding principles of the revolution in 2011. We welcome the efforts of all participants in the transition process. For the success of the reforms it is crucial that they are carried out in accordance with the democratic principles and with respect for the rule of law. It is important that all parties reach an agreement on the need for national consensus. The swift holding of fair and transparent elections will respond to the democratic aspirations of the Tunisian people.

We wish success to the new caretaker government of the Republic of Tunisia, led by the new Prime Minister Mehdi Jomaa. Bulgaria expresses willingness for dialogue and cooperation with Tunisia in the upcoming challenges facing the country.
