Political Consultations Between Bulgaria and Moldova

15 October 2026 News

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ivanka Tasheva and State Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova Carolina Perebinos held bilateral political consultations. The discussions covered Moldova’s European integration, support for the Bulgarian community in the country, regional security and opportunities to deepen bilateral cooperation in areas such as energy, connectivity and education.

“Bulgaria consistently supports Moldova’s European integration. We congratulate you on the opening of two new negotiating clusters and on the Moldovan Government’s efforts to implement the reforms necessary on the path to EU membership,” Deputy Minister Tasheva stated. She stressed that adherence to the merit-based principle and the established EU enlargement methodology was essential to maintaining confidence in the accession process and ensuring the sustainability of reforms.

The discussions also highlighted the important role of the Bulgarian community in Moldova in relations between the two countries. “We welcome the efforts to preserve the national, cultural and linguistic identity of the Bulgarian national minority, as well as its traditions,” Deputy Minister Tasheva stated. She emphasised the importance of providing opportunities for young people from the Bulgarian community to receive education in the Bulgarian language as an important element of bilateral relations.

In this context, the administrative-territorial reform in Moldova was also discussed, which envisages changing the status of Taraclia District by transforming it into a second-tier municipality. The reform preserves the territorial integrity and functional powers of the district, as well as the right of its residents to have their own directly elected administration. The prospects for the socio-economic development of the municipality of Taraclia were also examined.

The meeting also highlighted the role of the Taraclia branch of the University of Ruse “Angel Kanchev” – the first independent Bulgarian state higher education institution outside Bulgaria. Both sides emphasised its importance in expanding access to higher education and developing educational ties between the two countries.

Deputy Minister Tasheva and State Secretary Perebinos also discussed regional security issues, including countering hybrid threats and disinformation, as well as the recent drone attacks in the Black Sea. They explored opportunities to deepen cooperation in the fields of energy security and connectivity. Deputy Minister Tasheva highlighted the importance of the Vertical Gas Corridor for diversifying natural gas supplies in the region. She also drew attention to the forthcoming Regional Connectivity Summit in Sofia in spring 2027, which will contribute to strengthening links between Europe, the Black Sea region, Asia and the Middle East, as well as promoting specific infrastructure projects.

Both sides reaffirmed their readiness to maintain an active political dialogue and further deepen cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
