Georg Georgiev: Bulgaria Remains a Consistent Supporter of Montenegro’s European Integration
13 June 2025 News
Within the framework of the GLOBSEC International Security Forum, taking place in Prague from 12 to 14 June 2025, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria, Mr Georg Georgiev, held a bilateral meeting with his Montenegrin counterpart, Ms Maida Gorčević.
During the discussion, Minister Georgiev emphasised that Bulgaria has consistently supported Montenegro’s European perspective and acknowledges the progress achieved by the country since the formation of its current government in October 2023.
“Montenegro is rightfully establishing itself as a leading country in the EU enlargement process. We welcome the substantial progress demonstrated over the past year and hope this positive trend will continue,” Georgiev stated.
He underscored that Montenegro’s advancement strongly reaffirms the validity of the principle of own merits in the EU enlargement process – a principle Bulgaria steadfastly upholds. "We are not among the uncritical supporters of enlargement who are willing to push the process artificially, disregarding the merit-based approach in favour of geopolitical considerations. Your progress proves that sustainable reforms deliver results," Minister Georgiev remarked.
The Bulgarian side considers Montenegro’s goal to conclude accession negotiations by the end of 2026 as ambitious but achievable – a target that will require strong political will and continued commitment to reform.
Our chief diplomat drew attention to the importance of upholding the rule of law, the independence of the judiciary, freedom of expression and the media, as well as the effective fight against corruption and organised crime.
"We commend the results achieved so far and encourage you to stay the course on reforms. For its part, Bulgaria remains ready to continue supporting you politically, and by providing expert and technical assistance on your path to EU membership," Minister Georgiev concluded.
