14 May 2025 News

"We welcome the initiative of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Mr Alain Berset, for a New Democratic Pact for Europe. The Council of Europe must remain one of the guarantors of freedom, democracy, the rule of law, and human rights”. This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Georg Georgiev, in his speech at the 134th Session of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, held in Luxembourg, where the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Mr Alain Berset, presented his initiative for a "New Democratic Pact for Europe".

Minister Georgiev further emphasised that the Republic of Bulgaria is ready to take an active part in the initiative, which aims to contribute to the defence of democratic principles and to the strengthening of European unity.

"The Council of Europe sets the international standards in response to the challenges faced by citizens in today’s world," our country's top diplomat stated, while also acknowledging the difficulties the Council and its member states are currently encountering. The Bulgarian Foreign Minister reaffirmed Bulgaria’s unwavering support for the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Ukraine, and called for an immediate end to Russia’s military aggression and the unconditional withdrawal from the occupied Ukrainian territories.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs also advocated for enhanced support for the countries of the Western Balkans, recognising their vital role in   ensuring Europe’s security and stability. In this context, he reaffirmed Bulgaria’s support for the accession of Kosovo to the Council of Europe, which would offer new opportunities to all of the country’s citizens and contribute to the stability and prosperity of the Western Balkans region as a whole.

During their meeting in Luxembourg, the foreign ministers of the Council of Europe member states also discussed the role of the organisation in the current geopolitical context, the implementation of the Reykjavik Declaration, continued support for Ukraine, environmental protection and the safeguarding of the legal profession. The ministerial session concluded with the handover of the Chairmanship of the Council of Europe from Luxembourg to Malta.
