Ivan Kondov Participates in International Conference "Human Trafficking: The Path of Labour Migration – Pitfalls and Opportunities for Third-Country Citizens"

On February 6, 2024, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ivan Kondov, participated in the international conference "Human Trafficking: The Path of Labour Migration – Pitfalls and Opportunities for Third-Country Citizens," which was held in Sofia. The event, organised by the Administration of the National Commission for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings and the International Justice Mission, provided an opportunity for a wide range of representatives of state institutions, the non-governmental sector and international partners of the Republic of Bulgaria to discuss the counteraction of human trafficking in the context of increasing labour migration.

Conference participants discussed in depth various practical dimensions of national labour employment policies for third-country citizens and their relationship to the counteraction of human trafficking.

Mr. Ivan Kondov recalled that human trafficking is a serious crime against the freedom and dignity of the individual. He noted that our country is among the leaders in the European Union in terms of building a comprehensive legal and institutional framework for preventing human trafficking, as well as for protecting victims. He called for strengthening international cooperation, as human trafficking networks operate globally. He emphasised the need for prevention and addressing the root causes of human trafficking. He highlighted the growing challenges related to the activities of human trafficking networks in the digital environment.

In conclusion, Mr. Ivan Kondov confirmed the unwavering will of the Bulgarian authorities to counteract human trafficking.
