14 February 2025 News

Bulgaria highly values the excellent relations of good neighbourliness, friendship and partnership with Romania, in the spirit of which we managed to achieve the full accession of the two countries to Schengen. This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Georg Georgiev, at his meeting with the Romanian Foreign Minister, Emil Hurezeanu. The two spoke on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference. During the meeting, Minister Georgiev assured his Romanian counterpart that Bulgaria attaches great importance to our joint projects in the field of cross-border cooperation. We expect our joint efforts to continue to successfully achieve our goals in the interest of both countries, Georgiev stressed. The Bulgarian Foreign Minister also pointed out that Romania is among the leading trade and economic partners of Bulgaria and we attach great importance to the expansion and deepening of the traditionally good economic relations with our northern neighbour.

The two ministers also discussed the consistent support that our countries provide to Ukraine in its efforts to preserve its independence and territorial integrity and in its legitimate right to self-defence. The two sides also discussed support for the stability, resilience and European integration of the Republic of Moldova and the development of relations based on European values and principles, which is essential for our historical community there. Georg Georgiev and Emil Hurezeanu confirmed their mutual interest in continuing active cooperation within NATO and the EU to strengthen the focus on security in the Black Sea region.

On the first day of his participation in this year's Munich Security Conference, Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev also met with Ms. Priti Patel of the British Conservative Party. In his conversation with her, Minister Georgiev received assurances that one of the priorities of the main British opposition party, of which Ms. Patel is "shadow foreign minister", is to work to maintain the strong ties of the United Kingdom with its traditional allies, as well as to further develop the existing partnership with Bulgaria, in the spirit of the Joint Declaration on Strategic Partnership between the two countries, signed in London in October 2023.
