Foreign Minister Ivan Kondov held a meeting at the Foreign Ministry with the Special Envoy and Coordinator of the US State Department's Centre for Global Engagement James Rubin.
The focus of the discussion was the growing challenges facing democratic societies as a result of malign foreign influence and hostile disinformation campaigns aimed at undermining the foundations of the democratic world and the basis of the rules of international order.
The essential role and importance of enhanced cooperation and engagement of a wide range of interested institutions and individuals — government, civil society, media, experts — in combating disinformation and threats in the information space was highlighted. The need for collective action focused on building resilience and strengthening capabilities to counter hybrid threats was reaffirmed.
The meeting also discussed topical issues on the bilateral agenda of the Bulgarian-US relations, with an emphasis on enhanced cooperation in the field of energy security and diversification, as well as active partnership in the security and defence spheres. Bulgaria's accession to the US Visa Waiver Programme, the signing of a bilateral Social Security Agreement and Bulgaria's membership in the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development were highlighted as high priorities for the Bulgarian part.
