Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Vasil Georgiev took part in the regular monthly meeting of the EU's General Affairs Council in Brussels. The agenda of the meeting included the preparation of the extraordinary meeting of the European Council on 30-31 May this year, the regular meeting of leaders in June, the results and follow-up to the Conference on the Future of Europe and the hearing of Hungary the country to respect the values of the Union.

The Council has prepared an extraordinary meeting of the European Council, which will take place on 30 and 31 May 2022. The highlights of the work of European leaders at their upcoming meeting will be Russia's military aggression against Ukraine, defense, energy and food security. The EC Communication "Support and Reconstruction of Ukraine", published on May 18, 2022, is also expected to be discussed. the long-term recovery of the country. "Providing assistance to Ukraine is crucial. At this moment, granting the country the status of a candidate country for EU membership would be important, "said Deputy Minister Vasil Georgiev in his speech. He noted the need for the EU, along with other partners and international financial institutions, to play a leading role in Ukraine's reconstruction efforts. On the topic of energy, the Bulgarian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs emphasized the need for a common, coordinated approach of the Member States in the face of rising energy prices and supply problems. "Oil and nuclear energy are of key importance for Bulgaria," said Deputy Minister Georgiev.

European ministers discussed the draft agenda for the regular European Council in June, including Ukraine, economic issues, the Conference on the Future of Europe and the wider Europe.

Ministers also discussed the outcome of the Conference on the Future of Europe, which ended on 9 May this month. The final report with the results of the Conference includes 49 proposals with 300 concrete measures, based on the recommendations of the European Citizens' Panels, the contribution of the national panels and events, as well as the opinions and ideas registered in the multilingual digital platform. The discussion on the subject will continue within the European Council in June 2022 with a view to identifying further steps on citizens' proposals.

The Council heard Hungary on the procedure, in accordance with Article 7 of the EU Treaty, on respect for the fundamental values of the Union.
