Bulgarian youth delegates to the UN presented their activities at a briefing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

27 April 2022 News

The Bulgarian Youth Delegates to the UN Maria Badeva and Angel Mitkov presented their activities for the period January – April 2022. Their briefing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was held in the presence of Ambassador Valeri Yotov, Director of the UN and Cooperation for Development Directorate, and Ambassador Vladimir Sotirov, President of the United Nations Association of Bulgaria.

Ambassador Yotov noted as significant the youth participation on a high diplomatic platform. According to him, the war started by the Russian Federation in Ukraine is a test for the international community and will mark the work of the Bulgarian youth delegates to the UN. On the very first day of the escalated Russian aggression, Maria Badeva and Angel Mitkov, together with delegates from 18 other countries, drafted a declaration condemning Moscow’s actions.

Ambassador Yotov pointed out that from 1 July Bulgaria takes over the presidency of the UN Economic and Social Council, where the positions of the European Union and its partners are in opposition to those of the Russian Federation and China. The Permanent Mission of Bulgaria to the UN is already in the process of serious preparations and will seek the support and involvement of the Bulgarian youth delegates to the UN.

Ambassador Sotirov stressed that good news deserves more publicity. He emphasized the importance of the “Bulgarian Youth Delegates to the UN” programme as a platform that allows young people to propose solutions and realize their potential in the private sector, public institutions and NGOs. The President of the United Nations Association of Bulgaria thanked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the long-standing sustainable support for the representation of Bulgarian youth at the highest international level.

The Bulgarian youth delegate to the UN with a mandate of 2017-2018 Ralitsa Dikanska gave the floor to the current Young Ambassadors Maria Badeva and Angel Mitkov, who presented a detailed report on their activities over the past four months. The delegates spoke in detail about their participation in the ECOSOC Commission for Social Development, the International Youth Forum on Creativity and Heritage along the Silk Roads and the 42nd Session of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe. Maria and Angel are among the organizers of two side events titled “Youth Participation in Urban Transformation” and “Youth Wellbeing: How COVID-19 Affected Young People around the World?”

The highly appreciated work of the Bulgarian youth delegates to the UN is possible thanks to their preliminary coordination meetings with Ambassador Lachezara Stoeva, as well as with the youth delegates to the UN from other countries in the European Union. In the coming months of their mandate, Angel and Maria will organize and conduct workshops on urban environment and its construction through democratic methods, as well as initiatives dedicated to mental health among young people. The two expressed the hope that the virtual event formats will shift to face-to-face meetings entirely and that information about their activities as delegates will reach more and more young people. The selection process for the next Bulgarian youth delegates to the UN is currently underway and the winners will be announced in June at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
