Today we celebrate 75 years since the establishment of the United Nations Children's Fund - UNICEF.
The UN General Assembly established the organization in 1946. Its primary goal was to provide emergency care, food and health care for children affected by World War II. UNICEF is represented in more than 190 countries and territories, and in 1965 received the Nobel Peace Prize.
UNICEF's humanitarian cause is still noble - to protect and promote the rights of the child and to promote them as ethical principles and international standards for our treatment of children. Ensuring security, protection, shelter, food, equality for every child, protection from disasters and conflicts, the fight against poverty, the pursuit of peace and security, are priority areas as a part of UNICEF's global mission.
Bulgaria and UNICEF have a long and successful partnership at national and local level, which will continue in the future. The UNICEF office in Bulgaria, opened in Sofia in 2005, and the Bulgarian government have a common goal - to develop policies to increase child welfare in Bulgaria. These policies are aimed at providing comprehensive care and protection of children, supporting families, quality and inclusive education and health care, access to services and appropriate housing conditions. Protection and promotion of children's rights are a top priority of Bulgaria's foreign policy in the field of human rights.
