The Ministry of Foreign Affairs works within its competences for normalisation of the traffic at our border with Greece

23 June 2021 News

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is in contact with the Greek side regarding the traffic at our common border and is working within its competences to find a solution to the current situation related to the anti-epidemic measures imposed by the Greek authorities.

In connection with the control regime by the Greek authorities at the joint border checkpoints, on June 22, 2021 a conversation was held with a representative of the Greek Embassy, as the Bulgarian side raised the issue of opening the Ilinden-Exochi border checkpoint for passengers, and not only for freight vehicles. It was reminded that the Prime Minister Stefan Yanev, during his meeting with the Ambassador of Greece on June 14, 2021, pointed out that it would be very useful for the business and tourism if all border checkpoints between Bulgaria and Greece are open for passing.

The Greek side expressed its expectation that measures will be taken to facilitate the traffic at the Ilinden-Exochi border checkpoint, and that measures to facilitate traffic at the Kulata-Promahon border checkpoint will be announced by the end of June as there are plans to increase the number of inspectors on the Greek side there.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue the communication with the Greek side on the issue, insisting on creating conditions for greater permeability at the joint border checkpoints.
