Nickolay Mladenov confirms Bulgaria’s support for the Syrian opposition

“We call on all opposition groups to stand behind today’s Syrian National Council “Plan for Transition in Syria,” Foreign Minister Nickolay Mladenov said that the “Friends of Syria” meeting in Istanbul.
The detailed plan by the Syrian National Council clearly recognizes that the rights of all ethnic and religious groups must be respected, and for this reason Bulgaria will co-operate with the Syrian National Council to persuade those sides holding different views, Mladenov said.
He listed three main goals which the European Union and the international community should be working towards – helping to consolidate the opposition, the tightening sanctions and halting all flows of financing to the regime in Damascus, and preventing a humanitarian tragedy.
This meeting of the "Friends of Syria" group is the second. The forum was attended by more than 70 representatives, including US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe.
