13 February 2018 News

“Bulgaria is developing all types of tourism, but there is still a lot of potential to be harnessed. For us tourism is exceptionally important sector of the economy and that is why we are investing a lot in it. I hope to see a greater number of Bulgarians as forming part of your organization”, stated Ms Ekaterina Zaharieva, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs before Mr. Zurab Pololikashvili, Secretary-General of the World Tourism Organization of the UN

The Deputy Prime Minister underlined that the tourism sector contributed for a large part of the revenues in the economy of this country and for this reason the state invested a lot of resources into upgrading of the infrastructure. Ms. Zaharieva drew a parallel with the connectivity of the Western Balkans – one of the principal priorities of the Bulgarian presidency of the EU. “We have to realize that the better we are able to connect our countries and businesses, the more favourable the conditions for development of tourism would be. This sector is not just economy, but also education, contacts, roads, added Minister Zaharieva.

Both officials shared the view that the Bulgarian presidency of the Council of the EU offered a very good opportunity to highlight the role of tourism as a leading factor for stimulating economic growth and for building bridges between people and states.

Mr. Zurab Pololikashvili expressed appreciation for this country’s support for his election to the post of Secretary-General of the World Tourism Organization.
