Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ekaterina Zaharieva today received the Director General of the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) Michael Spindelegger. They discussed migration management policies and ways to improve their effectiveness, with a special emphasis on the region of Africa.
The two were adamant about the need of working actively with the countries of origin for overcoming the migrant crisis.
Demography, climate change and regional conflicts are among the causes of migration, Zaharieva and Spindelegger noted further on. They agreed on the key importance of actively enlisting the private sector as a partner in addressing the problem.
“We must give those countries a long-term perspective: this guarantees stability,” Zaharieva said.
The International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) was established in 1993. It has 15 Member States, including Bulgaria.
