Bulgarian Flag displayed at Brussels Town Hall

26 January 2018 News

For the first time, the Mayor of Brussels invited a country holding the Presidency of the EU Council to display symbolically its national flag at the Town Hall of the capital city of Belgium and the European Union. This happened on 24 January when, in the presence of diplomats, Bulgarian and Belgian citizens, Ambassador Maya Dobreva handed the Bulgarian flag to Mayor Philippe Close.

In their congratulatory speeches, the two stressed the role and significance of the Bulgarian Presidency and highlighted the shared elements in the two countries’ history. Mayor Close granted the Bulgarian flag a special place of honour in the Gothic grand hall of the building.

Pianist Vessela Dyakova and baritone Ivan Thirion performed the national anthem of Bulgaria and the European anthem. They also gave a rendition of miniatures by Dimitar Nenov and an excerpt of Georges Bizet’s opera Carmen.

The Mayor and the guests enjoyed the performance and warmly applauded the musicians and dancers of Na Horoto v Bruksel (a Brussels-based Bulgarian folk dance club and school), who entertained the audience with traditional Bulgarian dances at the end of the programme.
