09 November 2017 News

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ekaterina Zaharieva met with European Commission First Vice President Frans Timmermans.

The two discussed their future joint work during the Bulgarian Presidency of the EU Council. Zaharieva will preside over the General Affairs Council which has as its main task to prepare the European Council meeting and discuss a number of horizontal issues related to the EU policies as well as the European Council on article 50 that discusses Brexit. Timmermans represents the Commission in both councils.

Zaharieva and Timmermans discussed some of the topics which will be raised before the EU Council - the issue of the supremacy of the law within the Treaties and the prospects before the six non-EU countries of the Western Balkans to joint the Union including the inclusion of the region in a number of policies guaranteeing connectivity.

The two were unanimous that the stability of the Western Balkans is of key importance for the Union and, therefore, it is important for them to get a clear European perspective.
