Bulgaria elected on UNESCO Executive Board

10 November 2017 News

Bulgaria has been elected on the Executive Board of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) for the 2017-2021 period by 168 votes out of 184 on November 9.

The Executive Board comprises 58 member countries and is elected by the General Conference. It examines the programme of work for UNESCO and corresponding budget estimates. The Executive Board makes recommendations on the admission of new states, makes recommendations to the General Conference vis-à-vis the appointment of the Director General, considers the implementation of the planned activities and convenes international conferences on topics of the organization’s agenda.

Bulgaria was a member of the UNESCO Executive Board for a full four-year term between 1994 and 1997 and for a two-year term between 2007 and 2009. Its election for a third time on the Executive Board is a proof of the country’s contribution to the fulfillment of the organisation’s priorities in the fields of education, science, culture and youth. The country’s participation in this body will strengthen the country’s more active role in the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
