Joint statement by Nickolay Mladenov, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Anyu Angelov, Minister of Defence, on the occasion of the new US defence strategy

Bulgaria supports the view that the Transatlantic link remains the most important and most reliable in the global security system.
For this reason, we welcome the vision in the new US defence strategy presented yesterday by President Obama. The US and Europe are the closest of allies and will remain so in the future.
“This partnership is especially important in South East Europe and the Middle East, where together we will continue to work for regional security and stability,” Foreign Minister Nickolay Mladenov said.
“We welcome the support clearly expressed in the document for a strong and viable NATO, because we are convinced that NATO's active role is necessary for the security of Europe and the world,” Minister Mladenov said.
Defence Minister Anyu Angelov said: “The bilateral strategic partnership between Bulgaria and the US will continue to evolve based on the belief that we are a source of security, not just a beneficiary.
“Thus, our co-operation in Europe, Afghanistan and the Middle East will continue to be key to improving the defence capabilities of the Bulgarian army," Minister Angelov said.
