Pictures from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs fund are maintained in keeping with all requirements

06 January 2012 News

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is the only state institution to have such a significant fund of works of fine art, in terms of size and artistic value, Lyudmila Dimitrova, Director of the National Cultural Institute at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said at a briefing.

In the 2009 to 2011 period, 2140 works in 80 overseas missions were evaluated to be worth a total of 4 082 000 leva, while the evaluation of works in a further 12 missions is yet to be completed.

By 2011, the Cultural Institute had purchased 96 new works by contemporary Bulgarian artists.

The main purpose of the pictures from the fund is to present Bulgarian culture and art abroad, using our diplomatic missions, Dimitrova said.

The missions that hold the largest number of works are those in London, Paris, Rome, Brussels (NATO), Vienna, Belgrade, Ankara, Moscow, Tokyo, Pretoria and Budapest.

Only a small number of pictures are not currently on display in Sofia or in missions abroad, and the aim is for pictures to be displayed in embassies where currently there are none, she said.
