Statement by the Spokesperson of the MFA on yesterday's interview of the leader of the opposition in the Republic of Macedonia Zoran Zaev

20 March 2015 News

In connection with yesterday's interview of the leader of the opposition in the Republic of Macedonia Zoran Zaev with Focus news agency and the increased public interest in his statements regarding wiretapped Bulgarian diplomatic representatives in Skopje, the spokesperson of the MFA made the following statement:

In accordance with the internationally established diplomatic practice, Ministry of Foreign Affairs does not comment on matters of such nature. We hope that the developments in the neighboring country will allow us to continue to adhere to this practice.

At the same time we would like to emphasize that the internal political crisis in the Republic of Macedonia, caused by revelations of human rights violations and mass wiretapped phone conversations, including of diplomats from third countries, raises very serious concerns. There is a need of an independent, thorough and transparent investigation into the allegations. The current situation leads, unfortunately, to the conclusion that the construction of all elements of a country based on the rule of law is not yet complete. Only the finalization of this process would guarantee the lasting stability of the Republic of Macedonia and the realization of its ambitions for integration into European and Euro-Atlantic structures.
