The excellent political and economic relations between Bulgaria and Romania were at the focus of today's meeting of Minister Daniel Mitov and Romanian Ambassador Anton Pacuretu. Foreign Minister emphasized that the two countries cooperate on a number of topics of mutual interest in the region such as the Eastern Partnership, the EU integration of the Western Balkans, as well as the European perspective of Moldova. The Bulgarian diplomat pointed out the need for coordinating the positions of Bulgaria and Romania in regard to Moldova and support the country on its path towards EU integration.
For his part, Ambassador Pacuretu expressed Romania’s interest in cooperation with Bulgaria in regional initiatives such as the Danube Strategy and the cross-border cooperation programme between Bulgarian and Romanian Danube municipalities and regions. Both sides shared the view that the Danube is no longer a border between the two countries but a common river and space for cooperation and development. They discussed also the cooperation between the two countries in regional initiatives such as BSEC and the Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe in the light of the forthcoming Bulgarian Chairmanship of the initiative in 2015.
Among the topics of conversation was the Schengen membership of Bulgaria and Romania. Minister Mitov underscored the need for mutual support between our two countries in dealing with the existing obstacles to the accession of Bulgaria and Romania to the Schengen area and removing the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism.
Minister Daniel Mitov and Ambassador Anton Pacuretu discussed also Bulgarian-Romanian cooperation in the field of energy and energy diversification, focusing on the construction of gas interconnectors between Bulgaria and Romania and between Bulgaria and Greece.
