UNESCO project funded by Bulgaria won the "GEM-TECH Awards"

UNESCO’s e-learning tool "Women in African History" funded by the Bulgarian Trust Fund to UNESCO, was awarded the prestigious "GEM-TECH Awards" at a ceremony held on 28 October 2014 in Busan, Republic of Korea. The ceremony took place within the framework of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) conference in the presence of the Ambassador of Bulgaria in Seoul.
For the first time ITU in collaboration with the UN agency for gender equality and the empowerment of women - UN Women, organized the awards for "Gender equality in technology" / "GEM-TECH Awards" /, which are awarded in seven categories of individuals and organizations with a special contribution in the use of ICT to empower women around the world.
The Bulgaria-funded project was ranked first in Category 1 (for electronic applications and products for social and political empowerment of women and its relation to sustainable development) from a total of 360 nominated innovative projects from 70 countries worldwide. This project is particularly important for UNESCO, as it is focused on two of the global priorities of the Organization - Africa and gender equality.
The e- tool "Women in African History" is using information technology to create an educational resource with open access, which tells the stories of nine women from different parts of Africa, fighting for human rights and inspiring many other girls and women to defend their freedom and dignity.
In his speech at the ceremony, Deputy Director-General of UNESCO Getachew Engida expressed special gratitude to Bulgaria for co-funding the awarded project. "This award is an affirmation of Bulgaria’s leadership in implementing the priorities of UNESCO," said the Deputy Director-General Engida.
