Minister Daniel Mitov met with Egyptian politician Amr Moussa

12 October 2014 News

As part of his participation in a donor conference on Palestine and Reconstructing Gaza in Cairo, Minister Daniel Mitov met with Egyptian politician and public figure Amr Moussa. They  discussed the latest developments in the region, particularly the changes in Egypt in the last three years.

Discussing the causes for the Egyptian Revolution of 2011, Amr Moussa said that the dynamics of the social and political life in the country, as well as in the whole region, should be consistent with the realities of the 21st century. He emphasized that democracy is an unconditional necessity. Minister Mitov said that Egypt is a country with an important and leading role in the region and could serve as an example with its efforts on the road to democratization.

They shared the view that the challenges facing the Mediterranean region are similar and, in this regard, joint efforts are needed in order to overcome them. They named the problem with the Islamic State as one of the most serious challenges, pointing out that along with the threats of its expansion, the causes of its occurrence should be considered.

At the meeting, the two sides discussed the opportunities for reviving the peace process in the context of the Gaza reconstruction initiative. Amr Moussa said that Israel, unlike other states in the region, is a country with which Egypt does not have serious problems. The solving of the Palestine question, however, remains a critical topic. It was emphasized that reaching a solution based on the two-state principle is very limited in time and, therefore, the negotiations should be resumed as soon as possible.
