Bulgaria welcomes the efforts of Iraqi President Fuad Masum to form a government of national consensus and reconciliation. We hope that Haider al-Abadi, who was nominated as Iraq’s next Prime Minister, will manage to form a government which allows for broad representation of various religious and ethnic groups. This step should lead to reaching a consensus and a consolidated position of Iraqi institutions in order to effectively counteract the growing influence of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). In this critical situation, we urge all Iraqi political leaders to show a responsible attitude towards the democratic future of Iraq and the Iraqi people.
We express our deep concern over the deteriorating humanitarian crisis and security situation in the Republic of Iraq as a result of the aggressive actions and terrorist advance. We strongly condemn the violence against Christians and other religious and ethnic minorities in Iraq and the imposition of a radical religious ideology that lead to internal displacement and suffering of hundreds of thousands of innocent people.
The complicated situation in Iraq and the threat to the stability of the entire Middle East region require the international community to provide urgent and effective support to the efforts of the new Iraqi government.
