14 August 2014 News

Your nomination for a second term as a member of the European Commission and for High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs is an excellent opportunity for Bulgaria, which you and your team have deserved with the active work in the last few years. It is an honor for us to work for the cause and we will spare no effort  in order to achieve the maximum results - this or another high position in the European Commission,  said Minister Daniel Mitov at today’s meeting with Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva.

Thank you for supporting  the nomination of a Bulgarian as High Representative. My expertise in sustainable development, project management and various international matters, combined with the support of the Bulgarian government is a good step towards a number of key portfolios in the next European Commission, said Commissioner Georgieva. She pointed out that it is important to show confidence and to prove that we are serious competition.

You are well aware of the situation not only in Europe, but worldwide and you can immediately step in the role of High Representative, said Minister Mitov. In his words, Commissioner Georgieva is an excellent candidate for the position because of her proved credibility and reputation as a person who can balance between the different interests, as well as seek and find compromise solutions.

Daniel Mitov and Kristalina Georgieva discussed also the tomorrow’s  extraordinary Foreign Affairs Council and shared the view that it is a sign of how serious the situation around the world is. For a second time in eight months we are noticing four crises of third level of risk, now adding the epidemic Ebola virus in West Africa, they said.

According to Commissioner Georgieva, there is a need of a systematic assessment of the increase in the risks of conflicts and natural disasters, which have serious consequences both from humanitarian point of view and in terms of European security. Crises should not be isolated from one another, but perceived comprehensively, she said, adding that the deteriorating global political climate reaffirms the strong necessity of international cooperation and unity.

Crisis response and humanitarian approach should go hand in hand with the provision of targeted support for institution building, said Minister Mitov. He expressed confidence  that the EU should play a role in the political process by providing the necessary assistance for a democratic transformation in the respective countries.
