Minister Kristian Vigenin awards the golden badge of honor to Prof. Alexander Yankov

At a ceremony held today, Minister Kristian Vigenin awarded the golden badge of honor to one of the most prominent Bulgarian jurists, Professor Alexander Yankov. Professor Yankov is awarded for his outstanding contribution to the development of the Bulgarian diplomatic service and on occasion of his 90 year anniversary.

Professor Yankov is one of the most respected jurists in the world in the field of maritime law, a diplomat, MP in the 7th Great National Assembly, professor, corresponding member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, said at the ceremony Minister Vigenin. I am delighted to congratulate him with his 90th birthday and to award him with the golden badge of honor for his outstanding contribution to the development of the Bulgarian diplomatic service, he added.

The Foreign Minister also pointed out the numerous professional achievements of the exceptional Bulgarian jurist among which were the membership in UN’s International Law Commission (1977-1996), the International Ocean Institute in Malta, in the Executive Council of the International Law Association (from 1973). Professor Yankov was also Bulgaria’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom (1972-1976), Permanent Representative of Bulgaria to the UN in New York, with the rank of Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs (1976-1980), judge in the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in Hamburg (1966-2011) and a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in Hague (1971-1988).

What you young people do obliges us – the elderly, to continue supporting, as far as we can, your efforts, said Professor Alexander Yankov. He expressed his deep gratitude for the award and wished more international achievements of the Bulgarian diplomacy.
