Statement of the MFA of the Republic of Bulgaria on the escalation of the situation in Ukraine

23 January 2014 News

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria expresses grave concern over the escalation of the situation in Ukraine and the reports of heavy clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement authorities in Kyev that led to deaths and a large number of wounded and injured civilians. We expect a full and impartial investigation and punishment of those responsible for the deaths of demonstrators.

We regret that the call of EU foreign ministers from Jan. 20 for the authorities in Kiev to bring the adopted restrictive laws in line with international norms, and for all sides to start a dialogue and resolve the current political crisis through peaceful means, was not taken into account.

We urge the government of Ukraine to respect the fundamental rights of the citizens - the freedom of expression, press freedom and the right of assembly. We call the opposition forces to restrain and cautiously take actions.
