The Foreign Minister met with the Director-General of UNESCO

Minister of Foreign Affairs Kristian Vigenin met today at the MFA of the Republic of Bulgaria  with the Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Irina Bokova. They discussed the ongoing reform in the Organization and ways of enhancing its role in the region.

Minister Vigenin expressed his gratitude for the contribution of Irina Bokova to elevate the prestige and to achieve recognition of Bulgaria’s name in the international relations and global politics. " As a Bulgarian,  I am not indifferent to the place of Bulgaria on the international scene and I am committed to strengthen its authority," said on her part the Director-General of UNESCO.

The Foreign Minister highly evaluated Bokova's work during her first term as Director-General of UNESCO and confirmed the support of the Bulgarian institutions for the future activities of the Organization. Irina Bokova noted that serious reforms lie ahead and the urgent budget cuts require making hard decisions, while preserving the main objectives and the big ambitions of UNESCO.

Among the topics of conversation was also the work of the National Commission of the Republic of Bulgaria to UNESCO and the Regional Centre for Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in South-Eastern Europe, officially inaugurated in 2012in Sofia.
