Position of the MFA’s Spokesperson on the statement of Turkey’s Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in the city of Keşan

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, proceeding from the traditionally good relations between Bulgaria and Turkey, and in light of the forthcoming meeting of the Joint Commission on the outstanding issues, believes that such statements do not contribute to the development of the bilateral dialogue aimed at seeking effective and pragmatic solutions.
Bulgaria as a country founded more than 1300 years ago , with significant and lasting historical, cultural and spiritual presence, heritage and traditions in Southeast Europe.
Guided by the experience of history, we believe that the interpretations related to the past of our region should be treated with special attention, taking into account its characteristics, as well as the sensitivity they may cause.
We would like to recall that for the good neighborly relations and also for the European perspective of each country, the respect for international law, including the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity, are fundamental.
