Minister Vigenin met with UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova

Foreign Minister Kristian Vigenin met today with the Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Irina Bokova. They discussed the reform of the organization and the course of the campaign for Ms. Bokova to be re-elected to a second term as Director-General of UNESCO for the period 2013-2017.

Minister Vigenin confirmed Bulgaria's support for the candidacy of Irina Bokova, emphasising that she had taken over the management of UNESCOat a challenging period in its history and had been able to successfully get the organisation out of the difficulties and in spite of financial constraints.

Among topics also discussed at the meeting was the work of the in Sofia Regional Centre for Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Southeastern Europe, opened in 2012. Kristian Vigenin and Irina Bokova agreed that the centre, the first of its kind in Europe, is an excellent platform for understanding and good neighbourliness among the countries of the Balkans, which share a common cultural heritage.
