Minister of Foreign Affairs Velislava Petrova participated in a meeting with the ambassadors of the EU member states accredited in Sofia. The event was hosted by the Embassy of Ireland in Bulgaria in its capacity as the holder of the rotating Presidency of the Council of the EU.
Minister Petrova presented the Bulgarian positions on topical issues on the European agenda, including security in the Black Sea, the war in Ukraine, connectivity, the expansion policy and the negotiations on the EU's Multiannual Financial Framework.
Minister Petrova emphasized that the unity of the European Union must be at the heart of common efforts to end the war in Ukraine. The EU should take a more active role in diplomatic efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace in close coordination with Ukraine and the United States.
On the topic of the Black Sea, Minister Petrova pointed out that Bulgaria is working with Romania, Turkey, NATO and its European partners to strengthen security and limit risks in the region. She presented the joint work with Romania on the establishment of the Black Sea Maritime Security Centre as a network structure with mutually complementary centres in Varna and Constanta. The Bulgarian centre will be located at the Naval Academy "N. Y. Vaptsarov” and will work on the situational awareness, protection of critical infrastructure, cybersecurity, countering hybrid threats and environmental security. The initiative is part of the strategic European approach to security in the Black Sea.
The Minister reiterated Bulgaria's support for the EU enlargement policy, based on the candidate countries' own merits. Progress must be determined by the fulfilment of the criteria and commitments made, as well as by the clear political will to carry out the necessary reforms. Consistent application of this principle is important for the credibility of the process and the sustainability of the Union.
