11 July 2013 News

“The political dialogue between our countries is intense and fruitful,” Kristian Vigenin said at a meeting with Georgian Foreign Minister Maia Panjikidze. The Bulgarian Foreign Minister is participating in an international conference entitled “Georgia’s European Way: The EU Eastern partnership with a view to the upcoming summit in Vilnius”, being held in Batumi, Georgia.

The excellent political co-operation should give impetus to the development of more active economic relations between Georgia and Bulgaria, Kristian Vigenin said. He said that an example was the potential for co-operation in the field of energy security.

Bulgaria supports Georgia's territorial integrity, political association and economic integration with the countries of the EU and its Euro-Atlantic aspirations, the Foreign Minister said at the meeting with his Georgian counterpart. He assured his counterpart that Georgia can count on the support in this regard from the countries of the new group of friends of Georgia, as well as the initiatives of the Eastern Partnership of the EU. Kristian Vigenin expressed hope that Georgia's efforts towards initialling an Association Agreement with the EU would succeed at the Summit in Vilnius in November.

Our special relationship does not and should not depend on the political situation in both countries, because this is a durable and traditional friendship, Minister Vigenin said at the meeting. He invited his Georgian counterpart to visit Bulgaria.

Minister Maia Panjikidzesaid that she accepted the invitation to visit in the autumn with great pleasure, as well as the idea of holding political consultations to discuss a wide range of topics. These could include strengthening of trade and economic co-operation, focusing on energy projects in the field of culture and others.

Later today, the Bulgarian Foreign Minister will meet with the Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic integration Alex Petriashvili and the chairman of the Georgian Parliament, David Usupashvili.
