18 June 2026 News

On 17 June 2026, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Christo Polendakov received Alison Duncan, Ambassador of Australia to Greece, accredited to Bulgaria, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The two sides reaffirmed the excellent state of bilateral relations, founded on shared values and common interests. They also welcomed the deepening of cooperation within the framework of the EU – Australia dialogue in the areas of trade and investment, security and defence, science and technology, including through progress on the EU – Australia Free Trade Agreement, the signing of the EU – Australia Security and Defence Partnership, and Australia's association with the “Horizon Europe” programme.

Deputy Minister Polendakov underlined that these developments, together with the expected signing of the bilateral Agreement for the Avoidance of Double Taxation and Bulgaria's progress towards membership of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), will create favourable conditions for expanding bilateral cooperation and delivering tangible results.

During the discussions, the important role of the Bulgarian diaspora in Australia was highlighted. Through its cultural and educational centres, it continues to make a valuable contribution to strengthening bilateral ties.

The interlocutors also exchanged views on current international issues, including the war in Ukraine and developments in the Middle East.
