Minister Georg Georgiev Meets with France’s High Commissioner for Strategic Planning Clément Beaune

14 June 2025 News

Within the framework of the 20th edition of the GLOBSEC Forum in Prague, Minister of Foreign Affairs Georg Georgiev held a meeting with the High Commissioner for Strategic Planning of France, Mr Clément Beaune.

The two officials discussed matters related to defence and security, the current and future development of the European Union, and prospects for its enlargement.

Minister Georgiev noted that the series of recent crises, including the war in Ukraine and rising tensions in the Middle East, have led to a profound shift in the global security architecture.

"In this context, Europe must significantly enhance its defence preparedness and military capabilities in order to better guarantee its own security and defence, and to remain a credible guarantor of global security," our chief diplomat stressed.

He further emphasised that, in today’s increasingly complex geopolitical environment, maintaining unity among EU member states remains the Union’s greatest strength.

"For Bulgaria, it is a priority that the EU continues its efforts to achieve economic and social cohesion among its member states and regions. Cohesion is not only a tool for economic growth and competitiveness, but also a key factor in strengthening public trust and support for the Union," the Minister stated. He also noted that Bulgaria is actively working toward completing the process of euro adoption – a step that will contribute to greater economic stability and deeper integration within the euro area, while increasing investor confidence and trust in the Bulgarian economy.

Minister Georgiev firmly stated that EU integration remains the only viable path to peace and prosperity for the Western Balkans. "At the same time, we insist that efforts to accelerate the integration process must not come at the expense of the merit-based approach and the established enlargement methodology," the Minister of Foreign Affairs clarified. He added that, with regard to the Republic of North Macedonia, Bulgaria’s position remains clear and consistent – committed to the European consensus of July 2022, with no additional conditions.
