National Assembly Decision on the Progress of the Republic of North Macedonia in the EU Accession Process Formally Conveyed to Authorities in Skopje

11 June 2025 News

Minister of Foreign Affairs Georg Georgiev held a telephone conversation with his counterpart from the Republic of North Macedonia, Mr Timčo Mucunski, during which he officially informed him of the decision adopted on 30 May 2025 by the 51st National Assembly of the Republic of Bulgaria regarding the progress of the Republic of North Macedonia in the European Union accession process.

Our chief diplomat stated that this act once again reaffirms Bulgaria’s unwavering position and firm commitment to the European Consensus of July 2022, while also extending a constructive and encouraging call to the government in Skopje to honour the agreements reached.

Of particular importance, Minister Georgiev emphasised, is that the text of the National Assembly’s decision, adopted by Bulgaria’s highest legislative authority, explicitly confirms that the country has no conditions beyond those included in the European consensus. He added that this represents a clear signal of Bulgaria’s constructive and principled approach.

These same positions were reiterated by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Elena Shekerletova, who formally presented the National Assembly’s decision of 30 May to the Ambassador of the Republic of North Macedonia in Sofia, H.E. Ms Agneza Rusi Popovska, during an official meeting, at which she also provided the ambassador with the full text of the decision. Deputy Minister Shekerletova underscored that this act demonstrates the broad national consensus in Bulgaria regarding the European path of the Western Balkans.

Once again, Bulgaria has demonstrated its consistent support for the Republic of North Macedonia and its continued engagement in the implementation of the agreements between the EU and Skopje.

In this context, Deputy Minister Shekerletova expressed hope that the balanced tone of the decision’s text, together with the clear assurance that Bulgaria has no additional conditions beyond those defined in the European consensus, will be objectively recognised and accurately communicated in the public domain by the political leadership of the Republic of North Macedonia.
