Minister Georg Georgiev in Interview for the BBC: With the Adoption of the Euro, Bulgaria Confirms Its Geopolitical Orientation and Reaches the Highest Level of Economic and Political Integration with the Most Developed EU Countries

05 June 2025 News

"With the adoption of the euro, our country confirms its geopolitical orientation and reaches the highest level of economic and political integration with the most developed member states of the European Union," stated the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria, Georg Georgiev, in an interview for the BBC. "This bold step undoubtedly strengthens confidence in our institutions, affirms Bulgaria's position as an integral part of the EU's decision-making core, and elevates us beyond the image of a peripheral state," Bulgaria's top diplomat emphasized.

The Foreign Minister was unequivocal that Bulgaria is a pro-European country, adding that all surveys and statistical data indicate that over 60% of Bulgarians are pro-European in their outlook. "Our concerns relate to attempts at disinformation, deception and manipulation of public opinion. But with a swift and properly conducted information campaign, I believe these concerns will be overcome, and there will be no doubts among Bulgarians as to whether Eurozone membership is good for the country," Georg Georgiev explained. He stressed that the next key step for Bulgaria will take place on 1 January 2026, when the euro will officially be introduced, with a transition period lasting until the end of January.
