25 February 2025 News

Minister of Foreign Affairs Georg Georgiev participated in the High-Level Segment during the opening of the 58th session of the UN Human Rights Council.

In his speech, Minister Georgiev drew attention to the ever-increasing importance of the protection and promotion of human rights in today's world, marked by devastating conflicts, climate change, pollution and biodiversity loss, the rapid introduction of new technologies, and deepening inequalities. Minister Georg Georgiev stated that, in these turbulent times, adherence to the international legal order, which is based on human rights – is vital. In this context, the Bulgarian Foreign Minister recalled some of the voluntary national commitments that our country has made as a member of the UN Human Rights Council, related to the promotion of a culture of peace, tolerance, and understanding; the protection of the rights of children, people with disabilities, and the rights of women and girls.

"The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action are among the remarkable achievements in advancing the promotion and protection of women's rights and achieving equality between men and women. Bulgaria firmly stands behind the conviction that concrete policies aimed at empowering women and girls are crucial for promoting sustainable development, achieving social justice and prosperity for all," the Foreign Minister added.

Later, the Bulgarian top diplomat also participated in a side event marking the third anniversary of the Russian military aggression against Ukraine, entitled "11 Years of Human Resistance Against Russian Aggression." The focus of the event was a discussion on the possibilities for seeking accountability for the violations of human rights and humanitarian law committed by the Russian Federation on the territory of Ukraine.
