Minister Georg Georgiev: Bulgaria Will Continue to Uphold Its Obligations on Disarmament, Arms Control, and Non-Proliferation

25 February 2025 News

"Bulgaria will continue to uphold its obligations on disarmament, arms control, and non-proliferation," stated Minister of Foreign Affairs Georg Georgiev during his participation in the High-Level Segment of the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva.

In his speech, Minister Georgiev emphasized the growing threats to the international order posed by conflicts, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and the undermining of international institutions. The Bulgarian top diplomat called for collective efforts to restore trust in arms control mechanisms and condemned Russia's nuclear rhetoric, which once again puts the issue of nuclear weapons use on the agenda.

Georg Georgiev also highlighted the significance of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) as a cornerstone of global nuclear security, and called for the engagement of all nuclear powers in negotiations to reduce nuclear risks.

The Bulgarian Foreign Minister also stated that our country highly values the Conference on Disarmament as the only multilateral forum for negotiations on this topic for the international community, and strives to take a leading role in efforts to expand dialogue and achieve progress in the field of disarmament. Bulgaria will continue to insist on greater engagement, as well as the inclusion of new participants, so that the Conference reflects contemporary geopolitical realities and increases its effectiveness.

Founded in 1979 in accordance with the final document of the First Special Session on Disarmament of the UN General Assembly (1978), the Conference on Disarmament (CD) is the only multilateral forum of the international community for conducting negotiations and negotiating international legal instruments on issues of disarmament and non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and conventional weapons. The High-Level Segment is held annually in the last week of February, and participating member states and observer states are represented at a high political level – typically by their Ministers of Foreign Affairs.
