Deputy Foreign Minister Elena Shekerletova represented Bulgaria at today's meeting of the General Affairs Council. The ministers responsible for European affairs met today in Brussels to listen to the presentation of the priorities of the Polish presidency, focusing on those that fall within the competence of the General Affairs Council.
On 1 January 2025, Poland took over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union for the second time. Thirteen years after the first Polish presidency and twenty years after accession to the EU, Poland presents an ambitious programme for the presidency aimed at fulfilling the priorities related to the core issue of security. The Presidency’s motto is ‘Security, Europe!’ and its priorities will focus on the following seven strategic areas: external security, internal security, information security, economic security, energy security, food security and health security. Deputy Minister Shekerletova highlighted Bulgaria's support for the Presidency's priorities and praised the main focus on strengthening and guaranteeing European security in all its dimensions. Among other more important issues, she stressed the importance of the themes: migration, enlargement, the Single Market, security of energy supply and preparations for the next multiannual financial framework.
The Council also discussed the reports of the Annual Rule of Law Review for a further group of four countries — Hungary, Portugal, Romania and Slovenia.
